Aikenhead Centre for Medical Discovery

The Aikenhead Centre for Medical Discovery (ACMD)  is Australia’s first healthtech innovation hub that sits at the intersection of clinical practice, engineering and technology and industry.

Based at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, it brings together the hospital, five universities and three research institutes in a unique partnership aimed at improving patient outcomes and developing healthtech start-ups to stimulate investment.

ACMD has three key areas of focus – smart devices, robotics and implantables,  regenerative medicine and healthtech innovation including precision health, participatory medicine, and digital health.

Its initial facility, BioFab3D, is Australia’s first robotics and biomedical engineering centre embedded within a hospital. Here partners collaborate on innovative projects including the Biopen which helps accelerate the regeneration of functional bone and cartilage; as well as Just In Time which combines 3D printing, robotic surgery and advanced manufacturing to create tailored implants for patients after surgery and trauma.
