Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute (Baker Institute)

 

The Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute is an independent, internationally renowned medical research facility, with a history spanning more than 90 years. Its work extends from the laboratory to wide-scale community studies with a focus on the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The Baker is also Australia’s first multidisciplinary institute dedicated to tackling the deadly trio of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity and has more than 300 researchers, clinicians, research nurses and students dedicated to its work.

Amongst its discoveries is its work to define the differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes as well as pioneering research in Pacific and Indian Ocean populations that helped predict the global epidemic of diabetes.
